Russia to keep 7,600 troops in Georgia

Russian defence minister Anatoly Serdyukov has said that Russia will keep a total of 7,600 servicemen in the Georgian provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The announcement signals the failure of yesterday's peace agreement brokered by French president Nicolas Sarkozy, who had demanded the withdrawal of Russian forces to their pre-August 8 positions as a precondition.
