"It was a frightening environment to be chased along an open road by a Russian fighter, shooting rockets when you're in a Lada," he says, frowning into the sun. "The Chechen war, that really put me off wars. I saw a place that I had visited when it was at peace destroyed by war. I saw that nobody cared either."
